Strong winds and a five-metre swell were forecast when I arrived at Bombo Quarry at dusk. To my surprise, several other photographers had ventured out despite the conditions — a group of four had set up their tripods in a prudent line well back from the edge. Then, without warning, a violent gust caught one of their tripods and sent it toppling. The expletive that followed needed no translation. We all stared ahead in silent solidarity, a shared understanding of risk and loss.
